Gorakhpur district lies between latitude 26°46'N and longitude 83°2'E. The district covers an area of 3,483.8 square kilometres (1,345.1 sq mi). The district lies in the Purvanchal region of Uttar Pradesh. The district is situated about 270 kilometres east of Lucknow and about 102 kilometres from Nepal Border.

In the year 1801, the region was transferred by the Nawab of Awadh to the British East India Company and Gorakhpur was raised to the status of a district. In 1829, Gorakhpur was made the headquarters of a division of the same name, comprising the districts of Gorakhpur, Ghazipur and Azamgarh. R.M. Biad was the first appointed Commissioner.

Gorakhpur is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, along the banks of the Rapti river in the Purvanchal region. It is situated 272 kilometres east of the state capital, Lucknow. It is the administrative headquarters of Gorakhpur district, North Eastern Railway Zone and Gorakhpur division.
