The highway connects the eastern end of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) with Kawartha Lakes (via Highway 7), Orillia and Midland before ending at Highway 93. It forms the Central Ontario Route of the Trans-Canada Highway system from north of Sunderland (Highway 7) to Coldwater (Highway 400).
Highway 35 begins at a trumpet interchange with Highway 401 west of Newcastle, where it is concurrent with Highway 115 for 18.9 km (11.7 mi) to Enterprise Hill. [1] [3] For the length of this concurrency, which is located entirely within the municipality of Clarington in the Regional Municipality of Durham, it is a divided four lane route with no left turns, known as right-in/right-out (RIRO). It was named in honour of Charles Stanley Monck, who was Governor General of Canada at that time. [22] [23] It is one of the oldest provincial roads north of Toronto. The Monck Road starts at Atherley and runs beside Simcoe County Road 44 (Rama Road) and Simcoe County Road 45 (Monck Road) into the City of Kawartha Lakes.
