Hildegard and Dirk implore Saint Adalbert, illustration from the Egmond Gospels. Hildegard was the daughter of Arnulf I, Count of Flanders, making her descendant from the Carolingian dynasty. She married Dirk II, Count of Holland and died in 990. [1] [2] Together with her husband she donated the so-called Egmond Gospels to the abbey of Egmond. [3]
Dirk married Hildegarde who is thought to be a daughter of Count Arnulf of Flanders. [1] They had three known children. His son Arnulf became Count of Holland and Frisia after Dirk's death. The younger son Egbert [1] became Archbishop of Trier in 977. His daughter Erlinde (or Herlinde) was an abbess.

When Dunstan, abbot of Glastonbury, fled into exile, Arnulf received him with honour and lodged him in the Abbey of Mont Blandin, near Ghent. [11] Count Arnulf died on 27 March 964, allegedly murdered by Heluin in revenge for the murder of William Longsword. He was buried in the Saint-Peter's Abbey in Ghent. [12]
