For 1984, Mercury further updated its model range. Replacing the Zephyr, the front-wheel drive Mercury Topaz compact was introduced alongside the Ford Tempo, competing against the GM J-cars introduced for 1982. Sharing chassis underpinnings with the Escort/Lynx (on a longer wheelbase), the Topaz was developed as a sedan.

The Ford HSC engine is an automobile gasoline engine from the Ford Motor Company, sold from 1984 until 1994. HSC stands for High Swirl Combustion.It was made in two displacements: 2.3 L and 2.5 L, and used in only two model lines: the Ford Tempo/Mercury Topaz and the Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable.

For 1982, both the 4.2-liter V8 option and the station wagon were moved to the more upscale Cougar model line. As Mercury transitioned its model line to front-wheel drive, the Zephyr was replaced by the Mercury Topaz for the 1984 model year. Following its use by Mercury, the Zephyr nameplate was briefly reused by Lincoln in 2006.
