Freddy Krueger (/ ˈ k r uː ɡ ər /) is a fictional character and the antagonist of the A Nightmare on Elm Street horror film franchise. Created by Wes Craven, he made his debut in Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) as the malevolent spirit of a child killer who had been burned to death by his victims' parents after evading prison. The film series began in 1984 with the release of the first film A Nightmare on Elm Street which was directed and written by Wes Craven. Although Craven disliked the idea of sequels, he returned to co-write the third film, Dream Warriors (1987) and to write and direct the seventh film, New Nightmare (1994).
