A school was established in 1937, but most families still did not live in Minto year-round until the 1950s. The people from the Minto band were eventually joined by families from Nenana, Toklat, Crossjacket and Chena. Minto was relocated in 1969, due to repeated flooding and erosion. The present site is 65 km (40 mi) north of the old site.
Notable buildings include the Watkins Glen Municipal Building (1939), Watkins Glen Fire Station (1935), Watkins State Bank (1911), Hotel Kendall (1891), Haring Building (1844), former Watkins Post Office (1905), Freer Opera House (c. 1860), and the Durand Block (1897). The first Watkins Glen Grand Prix was held in 1948 on a 6.6-mile course around Watkins Glen State Park and the village of Watkins Glen. Cameron Argetsinger , a Cornell law student and SCCA member, organized the event along with the local Chamber of Commerce.

The original Watkins Glen street course. The first races in Watkins Glen were organized by Cameron Argetsinger, whose family had a summer home in the area. With local Chamber of Commerce approval and SCCA sanction, the first Watkins Glen Grand Prix took place in 1948 on a 6.600-mile (10.622 km) course [3] over local public roads. [4]
