The community is in southeastern Blair County, in the northeastern part of North Woodbury Township.It is bordered to the south by Pennsylvania Route 164, which leads west 2 miles (3 km) to Martinsburg and southeast over Tussey Mountain 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to Pennsylvania Route 26 in Bedford County, 5 miles (8 km) north of Saxton.

The park was established as Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania County Battlefields Memorial National Military Park on February 14, 1927, and transferred from the War Department August 10, 1933. The lengthy name remains its official designation—75 letters, the longest name of any unit in the national park system.
In 2011 the U.S. Army Armor and Cavalry Collection relocated with the Armor School from Fort Knox, Kentucky to Fort Benning, Georgia (now Fort Moore). With the move a majority of the collection that was at the Patton Museum moved with the Armor and Cavalry Collection. [2] As of 2024 the museum was not open to the public.
