The Breakers were founded in early 1965 in Memphis, Tennessee. [1] The band was led by guitarist Mike Ladd. [2] [3] Ladd, a fan of blues, had played as a young street musician on Beale Street, where he was eventually spotted and invited to back B.B. King at club gigs there with the blues legend. In 1991, Beale Street developer John Elkington recruited King to open the original B.B. King's Blues Club in Memphis and in 1994, they launched a second club at Universal Citywalk in Los Angeles. A third club in New York City's Times Square opened in June 2000 but closed on April 29, 2018.
