The boat was built by Catalina Yachts in the United States starting in 1971 and was also built under licence in Canada by Cooper Enterprises. In the first three years of production, 1,500 boats were completed and sold. A total of 6,662 examples were completed. [1] [5] [6] The design was replaced in production by the Catalina 270 in 1991. The boat was originally designed as Sparkman & Stephens design #2094-C2 for Yankee Yachts and produced as the Yankee 38, but that company only produced 30 examples between 1972 and 1975, before going out of business. Frank V. Butler purchased the molds and modified the design for production by his company, Catalina Yachts.
