Ongata Rongai (also known as Ronga in local slang) is a town located in Kajiado North, Kajiado County, Kenya. The town is situated 17 km (10.6 mi) south of the Nairobi CBD, East of the Ngong hills , and within the greater Nairobi Metropolitan Region. [ 1 ]
The river rises from a natural spring to the North West of the Ngong Hills at a settlement called Kerarapon. The river is somewhat fortunate, in that it does not run through a built up area, until it reaches the sprawling conurbation in North Kajiado called Ongata Rongai (meaning Narrow Plain in KiMaa language).
Kajiado County has a total population of 1,117,840 people, of which 557,098 are males, 560,704 are females, and 38 intersex people. There are 316,179 households with an average size of 3.5 people per household and a population density of 51 people per square kilometre.
The word "Ngong" is an Anglicization of a Maasai phrase "enkong'u emuny" meaning rhinoceros spring, and this name derives from a spring located near Ngong Town. [ 1 ] The Ngong Hills, from the eastside slopes, overlook the Nairobi National Park and, off to the north, the city of Nairobi .

The original place name is ɛnkɔŋʉ́ ɛ́ mʉny, literally the eye of the rhinoceros but functionally Rhinoceros Spring; an alternative name is ɔlchɔ́rrɔ ɛ́ mʉny (olchorro is a synonymn of enkong'u).
Other residential areas in the Nairobi include Kahawa, Kasarani, Dandora, Ongata Rongai and Ruai. [7] Githurai is extremely urban and heavily dominated by the Kikuyu tribe who are proficient in businesses. The presence of multiple campuses in the vicinity of the town has also increased the population exponentially.
Kajiado has a station on the Magadi Soda Railway line which runs from Konza (on the Nairobi-Mombasa line) to Magadi.However this line operates limited passenger services, the most convenient way to travel to Kajiado from Nairobi is by using a matatu number 134, with NAEKANA sacco dominating the road transport to Kajiado town.
