The precursor was the University Gallery of Fine Art which was curated by the university's fine art director. [2] In 1970, under Director Betty Collings' leadership, the gallery began hosting major contemporary artists and acquiring the collection that would become the Wexner Center as a response to student grievances about the Kent State shootings. [3] The RBA's first two exhibitions were held in 1824, with one or two exhibitions held annually thereafter. Stannard and his father descended from a family of well known Bedfordshire artists that included his sisters Lilian Stannard and Emily Stannard. [4] He was educated at Bedford Modern School, [5] and the National Art Training School in South Kensington. [6] He was elected to the RBA in 1896 remaining a member until 1909. [3]
Kenneth Steel (RBA, SGA, 9 July 1906 – 1970) was a British painter and engraver, noted for his works of art in watercolor. [1] As an accomplished draughtsman his work is noted for its intricate detail, which can be best seen in his landscapes views and street scenes, many of which were reproduced as designs for railway carriage prints and station billboard posters.
