Mason & Hamlin is an American manufacturer of handcrafted grand and upright pianos, currently based in Haverhill, Massachusetts.Founded in 1854, it is one of two surviving American piano manufacturers from the "Golden Age" of pianos (the other being Steinway & Sons), although some smaller piano manufacturers have since started in the United States.
In 1989, MacNeil sold Sohmer & Co., which then included Mason & Hamlin, Knabe, and George Steck, to Bernard G. Greer, who owned a controlling interest in the Falcone Piano Co. Lloyd W. Meyer, a former CEO of Steinway & Sons, was put in charge of reorganizing the two companies. [13]

As with Steinway's grand pianos, Upright Grands were sometimes given custom art cases. The most famous of these were the two Rococo art case Model Rs installed in the First Class spaces of the RMS Titanic along with a similarly styled art case Model B, in addition to two standard Model Ks located in the Second Class spaces.
Mason & Hamlin, however, embraced Theodore Steinway's original idea. They felt that the tuning of these short stretches of free string can be achieved with greater accuracy than can be attained with a duplex bar. With the fixed points of a duplex bar, small variations in casting are liable to produce imperfections in the duplex string lengths.
