In 1980, Annamalai became a member of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and was secretary of the Karisaloor branch of the party in 1990. The Congress party began to show weakness in the years after the 1962 election. [3] In the summer of 1962, DMK conducted demonstrations against rising prices. These demonstrations turned violent throughout the state leading to the arrest of 6500 DMK volunteers, 14 members of the assembly and four members of the Lok Sabha, including Annadurai.
The opposing National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the federal ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), did not win any seat; the official opposition party in the state, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), lost the sole seat – Theni – that they had won when they were part of the NDA in the 2019.
The party was founded on 31 August 2007 by R. Sarathkumar, a veteran Tamil film star and politician. In the 2011 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, the party became part of the AIADMK-led Alliance, [2] which included the left and actor-turned-politician Vijayakant's Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK).
Following his release, Annamalai moved to Chennai on Rajaji's advice and pursued his interests in Tamil literature and music. [3] He founded Tamil Pannai, a publishing firm, to promote books on Congress leaders and Tamil writers, including Rajaji, Kalki, T. S. Chokkalingam, T. K. Chidambaranatha Mudaliar, Namakkal Ramalingam Pillai, Kannadasan, and Vali. [4]
