The United States Air Force and its predecessors include a number of specialized Air Force Squadrons. These units vary widely in size and may include several hundred enlisted airmen commanded by an officer in the rank of captain to lieutenant colonel. A squadron may include two or three subordinate flights.
They used the ship name prefix "USAF" (e.g.: USAF Coastal Crusader (ORV-16)). Other ships would use the prefix "USAFS", for "United States Air Force Ship". The initial twelve Atlantic Missile Range ships were modified World War II cargo vessels. Six were FS-type ships and six were C1-M-AV-1 vessels. All were equipped with telemetry systems.

The 1st, 2nd, and 9th Aeromedical Evacuation Groups all previously existed. The 427th Special Operations Training Squadron (tail code IJ) at England Air Force Base, Louisiana, flew the Cessna A-37 Dragonfly (OA-37B FAC variant) from 1970–1972, assigned to the provisional 4410th Special Operations Training Group, Tactical Air Command.
