George Washington (also known as Washington and the Departure of the British Garrison from New York City) is a large full-length oil painting by American artist John Trumbull in 1790. Trumbull's earlier 1790 work, Washington at Verplanck's Point , which he had gifted to Washington's wife Martha, had been very well received.
The painting depicts the events of the night 26 November 1781, when the British Army garrison in Gibraltar made a sudden sortie against Spanish artillery batteries during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. [4] The death of Spanish Army officer José de Barboza is the focal point of the painting. [4]
It was noted by historian Justin Winsor as the best engraving of Trumbull's paintings and was used as the basis for several other engravings. [11] [12] [13] In 1845, William Warner Jr. engraved Gen. Washington. [14] Illman & Sons engraved a version George Washington - On the Great Occasion of our Presidential Election in 1858. [15]
The painting was a gift from Trumbull to the president's wife, Martha Washington, and is now owned by the Winterthur Museum.
