The Downtown Oakland Historic District, in the Downtown Oakland area of Oakland, California, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The listing included 43 contributing buildings, one contributing site and one contributing object. [1] [2] The district is a roughly L-shaped irregular area comprising about 11 city blocks.

Temescal was the site of agriculture, cattle grazing and greenhouses when, in the 1890s, an opera house was built in parkland north of the creek crossing at 51st street. The area grew and was developed into Idora Park, the earliest "trolley park" in the East Bay. In 1929 the amusement park was closed and was razed in 1930.

Horace Walpole Carpentier (1824–1918) was a lawyer and the first mayor of Oakland, California.He is also remembered as president of the Overland Telegraph Company and for defrauding the Peralta family, a prominent Californio family who historically owned much of the East Bay during the Spanish and Mexican eras, from their lands.
