The Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) is a public medical university located in the Urban metropolitan area of Karachi, Sindh, Pakistan. It was founded by Sir Hugh Dow , the then Governor of Sindh , in 1945.
Provincial medical entrance exams included the MDCAT conducted by the University of Health Sciences, Lahore in Punjab and Balochistan before the NMDCAT. It was implemented in 1998 as the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) on the initiative of the then chief minister of Punjab Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif to counter replete cheating in HSSC exams at the time.
Entrance into the medical colleges is based on merit under the guidelines of PMC. Both the academic performance at the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) (grades 11–12) and an entrance test like NMDCAT determine eligibility to enter most of the medical colleges.
Currently, Dow International Medical College admits up to 150 M.B.B.S. students per year. DIMC follows the semester system as per the directives of the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council. An integrated modular curriculum has been adopted by Dow University of Health Sciences since 2009. The DIMC is included in WHO directory and IMED-FAIMER.
