The Orders, decorations, and medals of Guyana were established after Guyana gained independence from the United Kingdom. In 1970 Guyana became a Republic and established its first two national awards under the Constitution of the Orders of Guyana. In 1976, the Constitution of the Orders of Guyana was amended to add a third national award.
During the colonial era of British Guiana, Guyanese athletes Jack London and Phil Edwards won Olympic medals in the 1920s competing for Great Britain and Canada, respectively. The Guyana Olympic Association was created in 1935 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1948.

At the 1930 British Empire Games, British Guiana won two medals. A silver medal was won by Colin Gordon in the high jump and a bronze medal was won in the coxed four event in rowing. In the 1934 British Empire Games, a gold medal was won by Phil Edwards in the 880 yards. Edwards competed for Canada at several Olympic Games.
