The baritone horn, sometimes called baritone, is a low-pitched brass instrument in the saxhorn family. [2] It is a piston-valve brass instrument with a bore that is mostly conical , like the smaller and higher pitched flugelhorn and tenor horn , but it has a narrower bore compared to the similarly pitched euphonium .
These terms stem from a comparison to organ pipes, which produce the same pitch as the pedal tone (fundamental) of a brass instrument of equal length. [3] Certain low brass instruments such as trombone, tuba, euphonium, and alto horn are whole-tube and can play the fundamental tone of each harmonic series with relative ease.
E ♭ alto/tenor saxhorn: alto/tenor horn; B ♭ baritone saxhorn: baritone horn; The B ♭ bass, E ♭ bass, and B ♭ contrabass saxhorns are basically the same as the modern euphonium, E ♭ bass tuba, and BB ♭ contrabass tuba, respectively. The euphonium is a medium-sized, 3- or 4-valve, often compensating, conical-bore, tenor-voiced brass instrument that derives its name from the Ancient Greek word εὔφωνος euphōnos, [2] meaning "well-sounding" or "sweet-voiced" (εὖ eu means "well" or "good" and φωνή phōnē means "sound", hence "of good sound").
It provides the bass of brass quintets and choirs (though many small brass ensembles will use the euphonium or bass trombone as the lowest voice). It is the principal bass instrument in concert bands, brass bands and military bands, and those ensembles generally have two to four tubas. It is also a solo instrument.

These instruments were designed to imitate the American concert baritone, which itself is a hybrid of a British style baritone and standard Euphonium. The bass-baritone eventually supplanted the baro-tone as the primary baritone voice, and is no longer called a bass-baritone, but simply just a "baritone."
Notes below B ♭ are called for only rarely as they "become increasingly difficult to produce and insecure in quality" with A ♭ 1 or G1 being the bottom limit for most trombonists. [ 1 ] Pedal tones are called for occasionally in advanced brass repertoire, particularly in that of the trombone and especially the bass trombone .
