The area was originally part of the Mission Rancho Lands of San Diego granted to the Catholic Church by the King of Spain.When the Missions were secularized by Mexico in 1834, the land was deeded over to various men, including Don Santiago Argüello, who eventually divided and sold some 15,999 acres (65 km 2) of land.
St. Joseph became a cathedral in 1936, [4] when the Holy See established the Diocese of San Diego from part of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The cathedral is built on the site of the earlier churches and was dedicated in 1941. [5] St. Joseph underwent restoration work in 2011 which included repainting and restoring exterior wood and concrete.
Tierrasanta has been almost fully built out since the early 1990s, and in 2010 had a population of 30,443 (ZIP code 92124).
