The museum was built after the Museum of New Mexico's collection of historic artifacts had outgrown its previous home at the 400-year-old Palace of the Governors. The Barrio de Analco is located on the south side of the Santa Fe River, across the river from the main downtown area that includes the Santa Fe Plaza and the Palace of the Governors. The Camino del Monte Sol Historic District, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a 52.1 acres (21.1 ha) historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.
