The oil and the oil filter need to be periodically replaced; the process is called an oil change. While there is an entire industry surrounding regular oil changes and maintenance, an oil change is a relatively simple car maintenance operation that many car owners can do themselves.
With modern synthetic oils and new tests such as BMW's LL ("long life") oil specifications, most current cars can go over 6,000 miles (9,700 km) before needing an oil change. Even most modern conventional oils (also called mineral oils) can take a car engine at least 5,000 miles (8,000 km) before needing an oil change. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Oil production in the United States, provided one excludes Alaska, began by following the theoretical Hubbert curve for a few decades but is now deviating strongly from it. U.S. conventional oil extraction peaked in 1970; by the mid-2000s, it had fallen to 1940s levels. In 1950, the United States produced over half the world's oil, but by 2005 ...
An oil is any nonpolar chemical substance that is composed primarily of hydrocarbons and is hydrophobic (does not mix with water) and lipophilic (mixes with other oils).
An ideal oil has consistent viscosity at all temperatures. We don't want the viscosity to change. A real oil does change - it gets thinner when hot. So pre-multigrade oils, they were characterised with a viscosity index (one number, maybe 50) and had a useful viscosity when hot. But when it's cold, it's too thick.
When vegetable oil is used directly as a fuel, in either modified or unmodified equipment, it is referred to as straight vegetable oil (SVO) or pure plant oil (PPO). Conventional diesel engines can be modified to help ensure that the viscosity of the vegetable oil is low enough to allow proper atomization of the fuel.
