Orchid Cellmark Ltd is a UK based DNA and forensic testing company with a history of UK and US ownership. Cellmark was established in 1987 by ICI having licensed the DNA Fingerprinting technology developed Alec Jeffreys at the University of Leicester and received a Queen's Award for Technological Achievement in 1990.
In August 2024, Eurofins acquired Orchid Cellmark [36] a UK based DNA and forensic testing company. In September 2024, Eurofins acquired Infinity Laboratories, Inc., based in Castle Rock, Colorado. This increased Eurofins' biopharmaceutical and medical device network in the USA.
DNA fingerprinting and DNA paternity testing had been mostly first developed by Cellmark Diagnostics (now called Orchid Cellmark), which became part of Zeneca; to this day it is one of the main UK DNA profiling companies; it was the world's first commercial DNA testing laboratory. For 1991, Zeneca had larger sales than Pfizer.
In November 2011, Labcorp acquired more than 90% of the shares of DNA testing company Orchid Cellmark for $85 million. To receive approval of the transaction from the Federal Trade Commission, Labcorp sold parts of Orchid's DNA paternity testing business to DNA Diagnostics Center. [41] [42]
