Richard Marcinko (November 21, 1940 – December 25, 2021) was a U.S. Navy SEAL commander and Vietnam War veteran. He was the first commanding officer of SEAL Team Six.After retiring from the United States Navy, he became an author, radio talk show host, military consultant, and motivational speaker.
In 1984, Red Cell was formed after Richard Marcinko relinquished command of SEAL Team Six to Captain Robert Gormly. [2] Red Cell members demonstrated the vulnerabilities of military bases and would regularly use false IDs, dismantle fences, barricade buildings, take hostages, and kidnap high-ranking personnel.
Marcinko also delights in recalling the gross behavior of the SEALs, such as eating the brains of a live monkey to impress some of his Cambodian allies. [ 1 ] Based on the success of the book, Marcinko went on to author a series of novels placing himself as the protagonist and entitling the series Rogue Warrior .
Richard “Dick” Marcinko, the first commanding officer of Navy SEAL Team 6, died on Christmas Day at the age of 81, according to his family.
In 1984, Marcinko and a dozen members of SEAL Team Six would go on to form "Red Cell" (also known as OP-06D), a special unit designed to test the security of American military installations. In 1987, SEAL Team Six was dissolved. A new unit named the "Naval Special Warfare Development Group" was formed, essentially as SEAL Team Six's successor.
