The first entry, Streets of Rage, focused on former police officers Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, and Adam Hunter as they battle the forces of the crime lord Mr. X. It is the only game in the series to feature a Shinobi -style special attack that defeats all non-boss enemies on-screen.

The soundtrack of the DLC Streets of Rage 4: Mr. X Nightmare released on July 15, 2021 was fully composed by Tee Lopes. The soundtrack was released digitally by Mutant Ninja Records and physically Brave Wave Productions alongside the game's release on April 30, 2020. Streets of Rage 3 later appeared alongside its other games in Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, and in Sega Genesis Classics. On May 3, 2012, Streets of Rage 3 was released on Valve's Steam platform, both as a stand-alone game as well as part of the Sega Genesis Classics Pack 5.
