A plaque in Laos, in Lao and English, commemorating the First Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge. Opened on 8 April 1994, it was the first bridge across the lower Mekong, and the second on the full course of the Mekong. [citation needed] The cost was about A$42 million, funded by the Government of Australia as development aid for Laos. [1] [2]
The bridge is 630 meters long (with a main span of 480 meters) and is 14.7 meters wide. [2] [4] It is about 10 kilometers from Chiang Khong District in northeastern Chiang Rai Province, in northern Thailand, and about 12 kilometers from Houayxay, the capital of Bokeo Province, northwestern Laos.
[1] [2] [3] The project includes a 16 km four-lane road, namely a 12 km Highway 244 at Bueng Kan district, the 1.3 km Mekong Bridge Proper (two-lane) and a 2.8 km road in Laos. Construction began in December 2021 and is expected to take three years.

The Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge [a] over the Mekong connects Mukdahan Province in Thailand with Savannakhet in Laos. The bridge is 1600 meters (1.0 mi) long and 12 meters (39 ft) wide, with two traffic lanes.
The name "Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge" was previously also used to refer to the planned bridge from Chiang Khong, Thailand to Houayxay, Laos, but this bridge is now known as the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.
