St. James received the status of cathedral in 1928 after the Cathedral Church of St. Peter and St. Paul was destroyed in a fire in 1921, but the arrangement was terminated in 1931. St. James Cathedral is a Catholic cathedral located at 804 Ninth Avenue in the First Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, United States. It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the seat of its archbishop , currently Paul D. Etienne .
Mt. Carmel opened in 1886, by the Sisters of the Holy Cross from St. Mary's, Indiana. In 1972, Mt. Carmel East opened to serve the suburbs. Also, St. Ann's Hospital was bought by Mt. Carmel in 1995. St. James Church, located at 1681 E. 55th St., Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1857 as a mission of Trinity Episcopal Church (now Trinity Cathedral).The first church was built in 1864-66 in an English settlement neighborhood at Superior Ave. and Alabama (now W. 4th).
The cathedral was moved to St. James Church the following year. Bishop Thomas Grady dedicated St. James as the diocesan cathedral on November 20, 1977. A renovation of the facility took place from 1979 to 1985. During this time the parish life center and Blessed Sacrament Chapel were built, and the cathedral church was renovated.
