The university system has a total enrollment of 244,507 students as of fall 2021. [3] UNC campuses conferred 62,930 degrees in 2020–2021, the bulk of which were at the bachelor's level, with 44,309 degrees awarded. [4] In 2008, the UNC System conferred over 75% of all baccalaureate degrees in North Carolina. [5] [6]
“In 1980, Carolina’s total resident undergraduate enrollment equaled 19% of the number of NC high school graduates, compared to 15% today,” the report stated.
All 16 public universities in North Carolina saw increases to their enrollments this fall. But there are demographic trends that could present a challenge going forward.

The enrollment growth is spread across the state, with all 16 campuses seeing increases this year. NC Central University, the historically Black university in Durham, saw the largest increase at 7.7%.
