Dr George Mukhari Hospital is an Academic Hospital situated in the north of Pretoria near the township of Ga-Rankuwa.The previous name was Ga-Rankuwa Hospital.It is a teaching facility for the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University formerly known as Medical University of Southern Africa/University of Limpopo Medunsa Campus.
The hospital was opened in 1967 and was called the J.G. Strijdom Hospital, named after J.G. Strijdom, a South African Prime Minister. [1]: 133 The hospital would be renamed 1 April 1997, after anti-apartheid activist Helen Joseph. [2]
It is one of the 40 Gauteng provincial hospitals, and is financed and managed by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Health.
