FORV Sagar Sampada is a platform for interdisciplinary expeditions in and around the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone, and in International waters with participation from various institutions, from India and abroad. Built in Denmark, the vessel was commissioned at Mumbai in 1984.
The institute has its origins in the Sagar Sampada cell, which was established under the then Department of Ocean Development, DOD (upgraded to the Ministry of Earth Sciences in 2006) for managing and co-ordinating activities of FORV Sagar Sampada.

ORV Sagar Kanya is a research vessel owned and operated by India's National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR). The ship has helped in India's studies of the Arabian Sea , the Bay of Bengal , and the Indian Ocean.

The ARS will have an overall length of 90 m (300 ft) and a beam of 14 m (46 ft). It will be able to achieve speeds ranging up to 12 kn (22 km/h; 14 mph). The ship will have a minimum endurance of 30 days or 4,500 nmi (8,300 km; 5,200 mi). It will have a complement of 70 personnel.
