Eagle Pass is a city in and the county seat of Maverick County, Texas, United States. Its population was 28,130 as of the 2020 census . [ 4 ] Eagle Pass borders the city of Piedras Negras, Coahuila , Mexico , which is to the southwest and across the Rio Grande river.
Eagle Pass voted 83–3 against secession from the Union. [5] Fort Duncan was occupied by Confederate troops during the Civil War. Eagle Pass was chosen as a trade depot for the Military Board of Texas. Eagle Pass was a major terminus of the Cotton Road, custom house and Confederate port of entry into Mexico 1863–65.
In 1886, a group of seven men from Randolph County, Alabama drew names from a hat to pick a new name; the winner, Hugh Ellis, was allowed to rename the settlement after a town in his home state, and he chose Omaha. [5] "By 1890 Omaha had three churches, a school, a weekly newspaper, and a population of 450." The town was incorporated in 1914.
