Kew is located within the City of Boroondara local government area. Kew recorded a population of 24,499 at the 2021 census. [2] A city in its own right from 1860 to 1994, Kew was amalgamated with the cities of Hawthorn and Camberwell to form the City of Boroondara.
Boroondara was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly [1] in the Australian state of Victoria from 1877 to 1889 and 1904 to 1945. It included the eastern Melbourne suburbs of Kew , Camberwell and Hawthorn .
On 22 June 1994, the City of Kew was abolished, and along with the Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, was merged into the newly created City of Boroondara. [4] The new City was originally planned to be named "City of Riversdale". [5] The council formerly met at the Kew Town Hall, at Cotham Road and Charles Street, Kew.
