One of the three restaurants of renowned Chinese restaurant chain Nam Kee is located along the square. Originally the area was part of the Heineken brewery complex. In 1988, most of the brewery was demolished, and in 1993, construction of the square was started. The name of the square was the source of much debate in Amsterdam.

Dam Square, also known as the Dam it is the main town square and considered to be the very center of the city. On the west edge of the square is the Royal Palace . It is roughly rectangular in shape, and stretches about 200 meters from west to east and about 100 meters from north to south.
Most of the cafés and restaurant are located on the east side of the square. A typical example of a traditional "brown cafe" (Dutch: bruin café) is 'In den Ouden Vogelstruys' on the corner of Platielstraat, reportedly the oldest café in the city (1730). All cafés and restaurants have sidewalk cafés overlooking the square.
The market continued under this name until 1876 when a statue of Rembrandt by sculptor Louis Royer was moved from the perimeter to the centre of the square and it was renamed Rembrandtplein (Rembrandt Square). Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. Historically, the square was the end of the road from Leiden ; it served as a parking lot for horse-drawn traffic. Today, modern traffic travels through the square and side streets are packed with restaurants and nightclubs.
