Windham Hill Records was an independent record label that specialized in instrumental acoustic music.It was founded by guitarist William Ackerman and Anne Robinson (née McGilvray) [2] in 1976 and was popular in the 1980s and 1990s.

[3] The record label was founded by William Ackerman, [4] later an award nominee and 2005 winner for the album Returning. From 1988 to 1991 the category was known as Best New Age Performance. from 1992 to 2023, the award was presented as Best New Age Album.

The first compilation also resulted in the formation of a new branch at Windam Hill, High Street Records, a label that was to do for singer-songwriters what Windam Hill had done for new-age music. This second disc was introduced as a High Street Records release.
The most famous piece on the album is a military-style march titled “On the Threshold of Liberty”. Over the years this piece has appeared on several Windham Hill samplers. A reworking of this piece was used as the theme of the 2000 film Rules of Engagement starring Samuel L. Jackson and Tommy Lee Jones.
