In January 2015, Lake Michigan College sold the 44,000 square foot M-TEC building to the Whirlpool Corporation. Programs previously housed at the M-TEC facility were relocated to the Hanson Technology Center, which opened to the public at Lake Michigan College's Napier Avenue Campus in the fall of 2016. [8]
The college offers 49 associate degree programs and 33 certificate programs. The college's main campus is located on a 111-acre campus in Muskegon, with extension centers in Ottawa and Newaygo counties. MCC was founded as Muskegon Junior College in 1926 and has been continually accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1929.
A second campus, Jefferson Technical Campus, is just seven blocks west and is home to many of the college's technical and trades programs. The Southwest Campus is located in southwestern Jefferson County, just off the Gene Snyder Expressway. The Southwest Campus is home to the college's Technology and Related Sciences program.
On September 7, 2012, local Detroit news reports indicated that a new organization, the Michigan Science Center, would open and operate the facility.
