Great Bend is a borough in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, United States, 39 miles (63 km) north of Scranton. According to 2020 Census data, Great Bend's population was 634, down 13.6% from 2010. [ 3 ]
It was renamed to Great Bend Township on November 28, 1814. [4] The present name comes from a meander in the Susquehanna River. [5] Great Bend Borough was incorporated from part of Great Bend Township in 1861 and Hallstead Borough was similarly formed in 1874. [4] The Presidential Motorcade passed through Great Bend on August 23, 2013.
Harmony Township was formed in 1809 from parts of Willingborough (now Great Bend Twp) and New Milford Townships. The present-day Ararat, Oakland, Jackson, and Thompson Townships were later split from parts of Harmony Township. [4] The borough of Susquehanna Depot was created in 1853 from part of Harmony Township. [3]
