The European Geoparks Network is a founding member of the Global Geoparks Network and it functions as a regional geopark network of it. As of November 2022, there are 94 UNESCO Global Geoparks in 28 European countries and there are several territories in an aspiring or planned phase, or in a national geopark status. [2]
In several European countries, national geopark networks were founded after the decision of the Coordination Committee of EGN in 2007. [4] They function as the forums to enhance the cooperation of geoparks and the promotion of the geopark concept on a national level and taking over directly selected activities of EGN / GGN in a country.

Managed under the body's Ecological and Earth Sciences Division, the GGN seeks the promotion and conservation of the planet's geological heritage, as well as encourages the sustainable research and development by the concerned communities.
The Geopark Karawanken/Karavanke is located in the Karawanks mountain range in Austria and in Slovenia and comprises an area of 1067 km 2. The crossborder geopark has numerous geological and other natural sights and became a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network in 2013.

Since October 2009, the Chelmos-Vouraikos Geopark has been a member of the European Geoparks Network, the Global Geoparks Network and the Hellenic Geopark Forum. [6] Based on the successful evaluations in 2013, 2015 and 2019, this Geopark stands out as a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2015.
