The coal towns, or "coal camps" of Fayette County, West Virginia were situated to exploit the area's rich coal seams. Many of these towns were located in deep ravines that afforded direct access to the coal through the hillsides, allowing mined coal to be dropped or conveyed downhill to railway lines at the valley floor. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection has started water reclamation on at least 2 sites, Carson One Mining and Cheyenne Sales Company. The Carson One Mining site cost $2.7 million and the Cheyenne Sales Company site cost $2.1 million to fund.

Mining engineers also supervise the construction of underground mine operations and create ways to transport the extracted minerals to processing plants.
