Linville Gorge Wilderness. The protected areas of North Carolina cover roughly 3.8 million acres, making up 11% of the total land in the state. [1] 86.5% of this protected land is publicly owned and is managed by different federal and state level authorities and receive varying levels of protection. [1]
The agency operates three Wildlife Education Centers, one each in the mountain, Piedmont, and coastal plain regions of the state. From its headquarters in Raleigh, the Commission issues a wide variety of publications, including guides for outdoor enthusiasts, maps, conservation plans, and a monthly magazine entitled Wildlife in North Carolina. Originally, the 12,000-acre (49 km 2) southwestern portion of the refuge, now known as the Pungo Unit, was established in 1963 as the Pungo National Wildlife Refuge, but was merged in 1990 with Pocosin Lakes. The National Wildlife Refuge is 110,106 acres (446 km 2), and approximately 90,000 acres (364 km 2) were donated.
Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge The refuge lies five miles (8 km) east of the Atlantic Ocean and about 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Beaufort, North Carolina . Established in 1964, the refuge consists of approximately 11,000 acres (45 km 2 ) of irregularly flooded, brackish marsh and 3,480 acres (14.1 km 2 ) of pocosin and woodland habitat.
North Carolina is the most ecologically unique state in the southeast because its borders contain sub-tropical, temperate, and boreal habitats. Although the state is at temperate latitudes, the Appalachian Mountains and the Gulf Stream influence climate and, hence, the vegetation (flora) and animals (fauna).
