Each household in Plano ISD is zoned to an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, and a senior high school. High schools serve grades 9–10 while senior high schools serve grades 11–12; however, any 9th or 10th grader may participate in extracurricular sports at the senior high level.

The current principal of Shepton High School is Courtney Washington, who was appointed in 2023. Shepton High School opened in 1984 at its current location. To accommodate the growth in the city, it moved to a larger facility from 1990-1998, located on Parker Road (and the current location of Plano West Senior High School ).
