It was constructed during a time when several well-known structures in Istanbul were being built or renovated, including the Ortaköy Mosque and Dolmabahçe Palace, in styles imported from Europe. Its front facade, constructed during a renovation in the late 19th century, gives it a unique appearance, with huge white columns.
A fire damaged the mosque in the early 18th century, and so the mihrab was also rebuilt, in the rococo style. The madrasa is located to the west of the mosque. It is composed of a central courtyard surrounded by student rooms and a classroom to the back, covered by a dome. The exterior is brick and stone.

The mosque was initially built as a small complex, with a hexagonal plan designed by the architect Mimar Sinan. Principally, the mosque was built in two sections, the central prayer hall of size of 18.90 by 16.40 metres (62.0 by 53.8 feet), and the mihrab yeri ( chancel ) of size of 8.80 by 4.60 metres (28.9 by 15.1 feet).
