The first known settlement occurred in 1804. The island was once considered to be part of Canada but, since 1823, has been recognized as part of the United States. Shortly afterwards a dispute over some harvested trees created a brief disturbance called "The Grindstone Island War" in which American militia attempted to prevent the removal of the logs.
Grindstone Island Upper Schoolhouse is a historic one-room school building located on Grindstone Island, Clayton, Jefferson County, New York. It was built in 1885, and is a 1 1/2-story, three bay by one bay, frame building on a granite foundation. The building includes a vestibule and small teachers apartment.
Canoe-Picnic Point State Park was purchased by the New York State Fisheries, Game and Forest Commission in 1897. Along with Mary Island State Park, it was one of the first New York state parks established along the St. Lawrence River as part of the St. Lawrence Reservation, a recreation area within the Thousand Islands region authorized by New York State in 1896.

More than 100 are in the "Houston Heights" neighborhood whose borders are, approximately, Highway I-10 on the South, I-610 on the North, 45 on the East and Durham on the West. The "inner Harris County" area is defined as the rest of the area within the Interstate 610 loop; "outer Harris County" is defined as the rest of Harris County.
The lake also contains the largest island in the Bisby Lakes, Big Island, which is on the northern arm of the lake. Brooktrout Point and Remson Point are the two peninsulas on opposite sides of the lake, in the southern half of the lake. There are a couple scattered piers on all sides of the lake.
