Pokémon Uranium is a fan-made video game based on the Pokémon series. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The game was in development for nine years, and used the RPG Maker XP engine. [ 4 ] [ 5 ] [ 6 ] The game adds 166 new fan-made species of Pokémon , with only 160 currently available, along with a new region. [ 7 ]
Uranium proved highly popular within the Pokémon fandom, garnering over 1.5 million downloads within a few weeks of the game's release. [2] Nintendo issued a DMCA takedown notice soon after, causing the game to become more widely known than it already had been. The takedown was met with heavy criticism by the Pokémon fanbase. [2]
The game was nominated for The Game Awards 2016 in the "Best Fan Creation" category, but was removed from the nomination page without notice alongside the fan game Pokémon Uranium. The Game Awards host Geoff Keighley explained that AM2R and Pokémon Uranium were not legally cleared by Nintendo to be included in the event. [31]
Games completed can be uploaded to the RPG Maker Fes Player app for those to download and play on their own systems. It is the second RPG Maker to receive a limited edition (the previous one being RPG Tsukūru DS ) which includes a CD soundtrack in a jewel case containing all the soundtracks in the game, and a full-color paperback artbook.
