The community was started by the Mennonite John Zook, who came to Larned, Kansas, in the 1880s and then moved his family to the location that would become Zook, a mile east of what is now Highway 19 in southeastern Pawnee County. [2] The community grew in population when the Anthony and Northern Railroad came through the area. [2]
Burdett was a station and shipping point on the division of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway that ran from Larned to Jetmore. [4] The community was named for the American humorist writer Robert Jones Burdette. [5] A post office was opened in Brown's Grove (an extinct town) in 1877, but it was moved to Burdett in 1887. [6]
