Stewart was founded in 1844 as a stop on the Alabama Great Southern Railroad. It was first called Stewart's Station, in honor of an early settler of the area, Charlie Stewart. [2] A post office operated under the name Stewart's Station from 1871 to 1903, and under the name Stewart from 1903 to 1982. [3]
Coffee County was created by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on February 9, 1854, from portions of Clinch, Irwin, Telfair, and Ware counties. These lands were originally ceded by the Creek in the Treaty of Fort Jackson in (1814) and the Treaty of the Creek Agency (1818) and apportioned to the above counties before becoming Coffee County.
US 78 enters South Carolina by crossing the Savannah River in North Augusta; sharing concurrences with US 1, US 25, US 278 and South Carolina Highway 121 (SC 121).
