Buttonwood Park is a roughly L-shaped public park located west of downtown New Bedford. The northernmost section of the park is wooded, and is separated from the rest of the park by a 7-acre (2.8 ha) pond. The southern edge of the pond is dammed, and a road, part of the park's circulation, passes east–west across the dam.
The modern day Mohawk Trail is considered one of the most beautiful drives in Massachusetts. The Berkshire mountains are clearly visible from several points. There are numerous points of interest along the way, including many scenic viewpoints, roadside attractions and gift shops. [8]

Established in 1996, the park encompasses 34 acres (fourteen hectares) dispersed over thirteen city blocks. It includes a visitor center, the New Bedford National Historic Landmark District, the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Seamen's Bethel, the schooner Ernestina, and the Rotch–Jones–Duff House and Garden Museum.

Also included is the stone counting house (also known as the Durant Sail Loft) built by Edward Merrill, the last surviving stone waterfront structure from New Bedford's heyday as a whaling center.
