It occupies a portion of Merritt Island, a barrier island, and is surrounded by the CDP of Merritt Island. Florida State Road 3 is the main highway in the area, forming the eastern edge of Tropical Park. Tropical Park was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census. The population was 2,013 at the 2020 census.
Merritt Island is a peninsula, commonly referred to as an island, [4] in Brevard County, Florida, United States, located on the eastern Florida coast, along the Atlantic Ocean. It is also the name of an unincorporated town in the central and southern parts of the island and a census-designated place (CDP).
SR 206 was legislated in 1931 to run from pre-1945 SR 4 (US 1) in Cocoa east across the Indian River to Merritt Island. There it would split, with one leg running south to Georgiana and the other north to Courtenay. (In 1937, both of these branches from Merritt Island became part of pre-1945 SR 219, later part of SR 3.)
A U.S. post office was established on March 8, 1886, with the name of Courteney, Florida, which was corrected to Courtenay on May 6, 1893. Postmasters for this office included renowned novelist Professor Peck and Edward Porcher. The Courtenay post office closed on March 31, 1930, and the area was transferred to the Cocoa post office.
