The locomotive was equipped with two 150 hp (110 kW) Cummins diesel engines, each driving a GE 1503 generator which, in turn, drove one of the two GE 733 traction motors, one per truck. In early models, the second axle on each truck was driven with side rods. Later models had chain drives inside the trucks that served the same purpose.

The FLXDrive Series of locomotives are GE's first battery-electric locomotives, using a similar design to the Evolution Series, with the exception of a diesel prime mover. The FLXDrive series was introduced in late 2019 with one BEL44C4D demonstrator unit, but other FLXDrive variants are planned for the future.
P-Motor was the class designation given by the New York Central a fleet of 22 ALCO-GE electric passenger locomotives. The P Motors were not only more powerful than previous New York Central electrics, but also a more advanced design using the highly successful 2-C+C-2 wheel arrangement found on the later PRR GG1 and New Haven EP-3 classes as well as nose suspended traction motors.
