The Wentworth Estate is a private estate of large houses set in about 2.7 sq mi (7 km 2) of woodland, in the Borough of Runnymede, Surrey. It lies on a gently undulating area of coniferous heathland , around 0.75 mi (1.21 km) south west of the centre of Virginia Water .
Watson-Wentworth was born at Tidmington, Worcestershire the only son and heir of Thomas Watson (later Watson-Wentworth, the third son of Edward Watson, 2nd Baron Rockingham) and his wife, Alice Proby, a daughter of Sir Thomas Proby, 1st Baronet. He was admitted at St John's College, Cambridge on 15 May 1707 and was awarded MA in 1708. [1]
Notable among them his works for the estates of Harewood and Wentworth Woodhouse. [ 11 ] He took particular care with their planning and construction to maximise value for money for both the immediate patron and for the buildings' future long-term maintenance.
Little however survives from any period prior to the early seventeenth century, except ancient deeds and some Gascoigne pedigrees which remain at Wentworth Woodhouse. The muniments may be said to begin properly with the period of Thomas Wentworth the great Earl of Strafford whose correspondence was preserved with care by the family.
