Swanepoel attended Grey College in Bloemfontein and played for the Free State Craven Week team from 1989 to 1991 and was selected for the South African Schools team in 1991. His senior provincial debut for the Free State was in 1993, whereafter he also played for Northern Transvaal, the Golden Lions and the Cats. [2]

Van der Merwe was born on 29 July 1954 in Frankfort in the former Orange Free State (now the Free State). [1] His home language was Afrikaans. [2] He matriculated at Grey College in Bloemfontein in 1972 and went on to the University of the Free State, where he completed a BJuris in 1976; he then completed an LLB at the University of South Africa in 1978.
